Updates this month at the Library
General Updates
The Library will close on October 4th and 5th in observance of Staff Furlough Days. Hours will resume as normal on Monday, October 7th.
The Library is now a Covid at-home test dispensary. You can request one (1) free kit per visit at the Adult or Junior Department front desks. There is a one (1) kit per patron per visit limitation.
The library now has a monthly AAA walk-ins. If you or someone you know who qualifies for AAA would like to talk to them, the next walk-in is on October 8th from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
October Community Partner Spotlight
Meet The New Heights CCDA team, dedicated non-profit members located in Benton Heights, and library friends!
Welcome to this month’s community partner spotlight, where we celebrate the work and lives of community members doing great things inside and outside the library!
This month, we celebrate library friends and partners, Yvette McCoy, Chris Britton, and Chris Craig, who are all members of the New Heights CCDA non-profit group located in Benton Heights.
You can find them at the New Heights Laundry Hub, which offers vital resources to the community, creating opportunities to connect with one another, access support, and most importantly, deepen their relationship with God.

Junior Department-
New Displays in the YA Department:
National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Find out you and/or your loved ones employment rights as a disabled person in America with this informative display. There are also fictional reads featuring disabled characters for your leisure! This display will be up until October 31st

Spooky books for the Brave of Heart
Think you have what it takes to finish one of these scare-tastic reads? Try your hand at this selection of thrilling, spooky, and down-right terrifying fiction reads to give your mind a treat this Halloween season. This display will be up until October 31st

Featured authors include Jimmy Carter, Anne Rice, Michael Palmer, R. L. Stine, Oscar Wilde, John Le’Carre, Debbie MacComber, Michael Crichton, Geoffrey Chaucer, Silva Plath, Anthony Doerr, and Randy Pausch
Other displays include Autumn Books, Halloween Craft and Party Books, National Hispanic Heritage books of interest, Breast Cancer Awareness Information, and a display celebrating the 100th birthday of President Jimmy Carter. We also have a display highlighting the new Non-Fiction books we have added to the adult collection.
Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, along with Fall, featuring topical crossword and word searches for you to take home. We also will have some Breast Cancer Awareness wristbands for you to take!
Featured as well is a contest to Jack Skellington, our Halloween October mascot to enter a raffle to win a $10 gift card!
The Adult Department is a host of the Lest We Forget Museum with displays in the main and reference areas, highlighting the many who have served. Lots of valuable information to learn as you take the walk through tour to see the artifacts. A great way to prepare for Veterans Day on November 11th. Frequent Movie Flyer Club: Get a punch card from our staff, and after 7 checkouts you get to check out a rental movie for free!!

Daily for the month of October during operating hours. Find the Jack Skellington plush and get a ticket in our raffle for a $10 gift card. Enter daily!
Grown Up Movie in the Adult Department - October 24th
Running from 4-6 PM. Movie TBD and it’s FREE!
Area Agency on Aging help desk - October 15th (date subject to change; check the facebook for more updated information!)
Running from 11AM-1PM. Come meet experts on aging in the area, and get helpful advice and aid.
BHPL Bookclub book pickup - November’s read is “The Supremes at Earl's All-You-Can-Eat” by Edward Kelsey Moore
Pickup starts on October 7th and ends on October 30th. There are 5 seats available, so grab your copy quickly to save your seat!
Cafe and Craft - October 10th
Running from 4-5 PM. Enjoy a cuppa, tea, or cider while making a junk journal (or adding a new page to one you already have), and this month’s featured craft; mini ceramic pumpkin painting!
BHPL board meeting - October 15th

BHPL’s Jigsaw puzzle club - October 17th
Running from 4-5 PM. Join us on our first jigsaw puzzle club, where you can work on a puzzle you bring in, or a selection the library provides. The puzzles will be stored for you to continue at next month’s meeting.
Silent book club - October 29th
Running from 4-6 PM. Sit in the quiet room to read or quietly discuss your current read with like-minded individuals. BYO drink and snacks, light refreshments will be served.
BHPL’s Halloween/Harvest Party - October 26th
Running from 12-2 PM. For the first time, adults get to join in on the seasonal fun! Have a light snack, play some games, make a craft, and listen to some awesome music in the adult department!

Family Night with Krasl - October 9th
Have fun and make an amazing craft with the whole family. Held in the Auditorium. Running from 5-6:30PM.
Wake Up, Shake Up Storytime - Every Wednesday
Running from 12:30-1:30 PM. Come have a book read to your little one just before naptime to shake those jumping-jitters out.
Coloring Club - Every Thursday
Running from 4-5:30 PM. Listen to quiet classical music and color a page to take home or leave on the coloring club wall.
Kids Afterschool Crafternoon - October 7th
Running from 4-6 PM. Come make a fall themed craft while enjoying light refreshments!
Teen’s Afterschool Crafternoon - October 14th
Running from 4-6 PM. Come make a fall themed craft while enjoying light refreshments!
Family movie night - October 21st
Running from 4-6 PM. Come watch “Haunted Mansion” starring Eddie Murphy and enjoy popcorn! BYO snacks and blankets.
Baby Bookworms with Kinship Support Group - October 8th & 22nd
Running from 1-3 PM. Come play with your young ones while you wait to pick your school kids up from school. Enjoy a story time, various toys, and resources from our local Kinship program.
We’re All in This Together: Role-Model Reading Series - October 23rd
Running from 5-7 PM. Join the library and Charlene Jones of Talking is Teaching as we continue to spread the joy of learning through reading. This month's theme is Harvest and Halloween, so we encourage you to dress up and join us for spooky reads by community role-models!
BHPL’s Halloween/Harvest Party - October 26th
Running from 12-2. Make crafts, play games, win prizes, have refreshments, and much more at our annual Halloween/Harvest Party! Costumes are encouraged, and make sure you bring your trick-o-treat bag!
BHPL at the Trick or Treat in the Benton Harbor Arts District - October 31st
Running from 4:30-6 PM. Stop by the library table and many more for candy and trinkets this Halloween. We can’t wait to see your awesome costumes this year!
Melty beads in the Department - October 28th
Running from 4-6 PM. You know the drill; make melty bead art for a fun and relaxing evening.
