The Benton Harbor Public Library has served the community in its present location since 1968. Since that time, little has been done to keep pace with the everchanging landscape of technology and energy efficiency.
The bones of the facility are strong and timeless. The mechanical and electrical systems are long past their life expectancy.
The Board of Trustees has embarked on a journey of rediscovery and renovation for this jewel in the Benton Harbor community.
Plans include an entire updating of the mechanical and electrical systems to keep pace with the culture of today and the future.
The Children and Teens will have spaces designed for their needs. The Adult patrons will have more quiet space, more computers and greater access to the collection.
The Benton Harbor community will benefit from the planned community spaces allowing for theater productions and art exhibitions.
Join us in making this dream a reality by making a three year pledge of financial support or even a one time or occasional donation. The Library is the heart of the community. Let's keep the dream alive!
Renovation Update,
September 2010
The plans have been drawn up, a model of the renovation is on display in the library as are display boards of proposed layouts and materials for the interior. Our next step is funding. The projected budget is $4 million dollars.
If you have visited the Library recently or noticed the Home Page, we are without air conditioning. The system designed in 1968 no longer functions. The Board decided to upgrade the air conditioning system to one that will be compatible with the renovation plans. It is hoped that the new system will be ready to be installed in September. Keep in mind that this is YOUR Library. Every dollar helps.
All donations are tax deductible. Let us know how you can help. Donations and pledges may be may through this site or by contacting the library.
